FTP & Using InfoStructure Personal Web-Space

Step 1 - Download & Install FTP Client Software

There are many different FTP (File Transfer Protocol) Clients available online.  Most will work fine.  For this tutorial, we will be using CoreFTP.  If you are an advanced user and are already familiar with downloading and installing software, download CoreFTP and skip ahead to the "Using Core FTP" portion of the tutorial.

  1. ln order to download the an FTP program you will need to be connected to the Internet and take your web browser to www.coreftp.com

  2. From that page click the word DOWNLOAD BUTTON in the middle of the CoreFTP web page to get to the page where the good people at CoreFTP organize what you can download.

  3. The first block of links are different places you can download the software.  Click on one of them (like www.coreftp.com) and a window similar to this will pop up:

  1. Now to download the software, choose SAVE.  You will get the following window:

! Note the name of the file you are saving (coreftplite.exe) !

  • Choose your DESKTOP from the top menu (1).

  • Then click the SAVE BUTTON at the bottom (2).

When the file is saved, you will see an icon like this on your desktop:

  1. Double click on the icon to begin installing the program on your computer.

  2. Once you double click on the icon you saved to your desktop, you will see an image which looks like this:

In a few moments, you will see this window:

  1. Click NEXT and then you will see the software begin to install:

  1. Wait until the NEXT button has changed from gray to black, and then click it again.

  1. Click FINISH and restart your computer if asked.

Step 2 - Using CoreFTP

A new CoreFTP icon was installed on your desktop and in the start menu.

  1. Double click the desktop icon.  The first thing we'll see is the "Splash Screen."

  1. Upon first launch we will be presented with the following choice.  Choose YES.

You will see the "Site Manager" below each time your run Core FTP.

  1. Fill in the following:

  • SITE NAME:  We used "usingftp on id.mind.net" "My Personal Web-space" will also work.

  • HOST / IP / URL:  Use "id.mind.net" for InfoStructure personal space.

  • USERNAME:  Put in the first part of your e-mail address (everything before the @).

  • PASSWORD:  Enter the Password for that e-mail address.

Leave the "Don't Save Password" box unchecked, unless you want

to enter your password each time for reasons of security.

  1. Once the information is filled out, click CONNECT.  When connected, the "site manager" window will go away and you will see the main file transfer window for CoreFTP.

Like many FTP clients, CoreFTP displays two main windows . . .

  • LOCAL VIEW (1):  This is a list of the files on YOUR computer

  • REMOTE VIEW (2):. This window shows the files on the REMOTE computer, or
in this instance your personal directory at id.mind.net.

  • EXAMPLE:  Let's say you want to back up a copy of your address book using your personal web space on id.mind.net.  First you have to find the file that is your address book on your local computer in the LOCAL VIEW.  Double click on a folder to enter into that folder or click the button that is a picture of a folder with an arrow pointing up to go up to the next level.

  1. Find your Windows address book (jon.wab in the example above).

  • Click on it once to highlight it (1).

  • Click on the arrow pointing to the "remote side" and a copy of your address book will be transferred to your personal directory at id.mind.net (2).

Your address book is now stored in your personal web space!
InfoStructure allows a maximum of 25 megabytes of storage per personal account.

PUBLISHING WEB CONTENT:  If you want to make files like pictures or web pages available to the public you will need to create a directory named "html" and place your files in that folder.  Here's how to create that folder . . .

  • Click on the NEW FOLDER icon.

  • Type "html" in lower case letters.

  • Click OK.

  • Double click on the html folder you just created to open it.

  • You can now move the files of your choice from your local computer to the html directory you created on the server and they will be available to other Internet users.  Careful not to publish things you don't want to or should not share!

  • In this example, we move a picture named "fixie.jpg" to the server and now anyone in the world can view the picture.

  • To see the file fixie.jpg, open your web browser to http://id.mind.net/~usingftp/fixie.jpg.

Enjoy your new FTP client and skill!
